BARNARD COLLEGE SUMMER 2013
VANESSA THILL & EUNICE YOONI KIM

This summer exhibition of student work focuses on bodily tactility, layering, and doubling. Starting from a traditional standpoint of painting, the artists have taken innovative approaches to texture and form. Whether it’s coffee grounds and dryer lint on unprimed canvas, stitching and embossing on velvet, or gel medium-covered fruit, unique attitudes toward the surface mark these artists’ endeavors. This interest in physicality leads to a concern with the body and its fragmentation. The human form, so often a subject of studio painting, is all but absent here, reduced to its traces and memories.
